Ali G is one of Sacha Baron Cohen’s irreverent characters. He is the forerunner to the character Borat created by the English comedian-sensation. Though he looks much different than Borat, Ali G interviews unsuspecting people in much the same way as Borat, ultimately embarrassing them. Ali G hosted a comedy show on HBO called Ali G in da USA and modeled after a similar series in the UK. He followed the show’s success with a movie called Ali G Indahouse in 2002.
Ali G found fame as a bumbling journalist who interviewed scores of notable celebrities; among them astronaut Buzz Aldrin, whom he called Buzz Lightyear; conservative politician, Newt Gingrich; LAPD celeb Daryl Gates; and broadcast journalist Sam Donaldson. Editorial pundit, Andy Rooney, actually terminated his Ali G interview in admonition of G’s poor grammar. For example, Ali G accused Rooney of being “racialist” after asking him, “is it 'cos I is black?” Rooney first corrected his grammar and then just walked away shaking his head.
Ali G is simultaneously loved and hated for essentially the same reasons; his brand of humor precludes him from recognizing any subject as taboo. He is irreverent, rude, racist: Ali G doesn’t hesitate to ask questions or make comments relating to ethnic, sexual, political or religious issues.
