Red Hot Chili Peppers
A Post-Grunge Act with Original Style
The Chili Peppers first made their name a constant on the American music scene in 1992 with their tamed single “Under the Bridge.” Immediately mainstream rock and pop audiences were intrigued. The sound was gutsy, yet sensitive and the band’s name of course set them apart immediately. But the Red Hot Chili Peppers already had a history behind them. This was no ballad band. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, including Flea, John Frusciante, Anthony Kiedis, and Chad Smith, epitomize a hard-boiled rock band that cleverly synthesizes post-grunge, rap, hard rock and punk as well as other genres. Add to the mix their in-your-face concert style and you’ve got one of the most original rock bands at work.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Success
The nucleus of the Red Hot Chili Peppers gelled in 1983 in L.A. during the grunge era. But the Peppers distinguished themselve with a unique sound and style. Flea and Kiedis were there from the beginning and a string of other band members followed. From general disputes to drug problems the band failed to keep a consistent crew. In 1989 the final two members, Frusciante and Smith were hired. Also in ‘89 the Chili Peppers produced a break-through album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Singles “Give it Away,” “Suck My Kiss” and “Under the Bridge” exemplified the versatility of the band.
Between 1992 and 1998 the band stalled. The Chili Peppers lost Frusciante for this period—he struggled with drug abuse—but invited him back in ’98 after rehab. Frusciante’s reunion with the band once again proved his mettle as a leading rock guitarist and the chemistry this foursome possesses. Californication was released in 1999 to critical acclaim. 2006 brought the group multiple Grammy wins for their Stadium Arcadium album, including singles, “Dani California” and “Snow (Hey Oh).”
