Nickelback is testament to the influence of Canadian rock in America. The band was a fresh upstart only a little over a decade ago, but only recently descended out of Alberta. Lead singer Chad Kroeger pens most of the band’s songs and is backed up by band members Ryan Peake, Daniel Adair and Mike Kroeger. Their very first album, Curb was self-promoted and remains obscure to all but the most die-hard Nickelback fans.
Importing their blend of sleek hard rock, the band became an immediate success here in the States. But the insurgence took a few years to actually reach fever pitch. Nickelback had already won Juno Awards in Canada by 2001, for their first commercial album, The State. The single “Leader of the Pack” went straight to the top of Canadian charts. They quickly followed this success with their second album, Silver Side Up, released in 2002 to both Canadian and American hard rock audiences. The track “How You Remind Me” was one of the most played that year.
In 2003 with Junos already to their credit the band now found a wellspring of American fans and earned their first Grammy nomination. This was for their American break-out track “How You Remind Me.” Since then the band has earned three more Grammy nominations, Best Rock Song for “Someday,” Best Rock Album for The Long Road and Best Hard Rock Performance for “Feelin’ Way Too Damn Good.”
All the Right Reasons was released in 2005 and features hit singles “Far Away” and “Rock Star.” The record is still hitting high on charts around the world, but has already sold over 7 million copies.
