Mariah Carey has had a storied career. It has come in fits and starts and she has had to prove her mettle all over again this last time around. In the early 1990s Mariah Carey was THE diva to beat.
Her vocal range was unmatched and she was successful not only for her vocal styling, but as songwriter and producer. The decade could best be described as her Columbia Era. Carey and Columbia released seven albums between 1990 and 1999. She left Columbia in 2000, after her disappointing album, Rainbow.
Even though critics had called Rainbow a stylistic success it fell sadly short on sales and audience appeal. Perhaps fans simply wanted more of the same old same old Mariah, when instead she delivered a repackaged, slickly conceptualized hip-hop R&B album. At Virgin Records Mariah’s success slipped even more until finally that relationship was concluded.
After Rainbow, her career took a nosedive regardless of the musical measures and professional chances she took. She was unable to pull out of the downward spiral until 2005 when she introduced her ninth album and conceptual persona. The Emancipation of Mimi seemed to come out of nowhere. Mimi made hit singles out of “We Belong Together,” “Shake It Off,” and “Don’t Forget About Us.” Suddenly Mariah was back in diva status and set off on her Adventures of Mimi tour to promote the new era. The new album was nominated for Grammys in categories Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. She will reportedly release at least one new album, maybe two in 2007.
