Grammy-award winning artist Sean Paul hails from Jamaica bundled with a variable background of cultural roots from Portuguese and Chinese to Jewish. His musical style can best be categorized as a generous mesh of reggae and hip-hop. Paul’s musical career began early and his early associations were reggae bands and djs whose industry contacts earned Paul his chances to break into the business with a couple of early singles unassociated to any album. His sound though made it to the United States where audiences interested in world reggae latched onto his rhythms and rhymes.
Collaborations in the late 1990s with well-respected rappers led to singles that made it into movies and onto albums where Paul was openly engaged with a new audience. In 1999 his single “Hot Gal Today” branded his style and made his name commonplace in hip-hop and reggae. This single was one of his biggest hits to date in the U.S.
Paul was signed by VP Records and immediately released his debut album, Stage One in 2000. His sound and wide network of musical associations won him international fans. Singles “Gimme the Light” and “Get Busy” introduced the much-anticipated follow-up album in 2002, Dutty Rock, which eventually won Paul a Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Following this success, other hip-hop artists invited Paul to appear on a number of key recordings that also earned him further accolades.
In order to promote his 2005 album, The Trinity, Sean Paul was an opener for Mariah Carey’s Adventures of Mimi Tour, a huge vehicle for his career.
