Cook up some hip-hop, spice it with boogie and pop-funk, and you’ve got a musical brew like the Black Eyed Peas. Although the group did not enter the wider field of view until 2003 with the surprisingly fresh album Elephunk, the Peas have been developing their musical persona since 1988. Original band members include will.i.am and Apl.de.ap. In 1995 Taboo joined the first-generation Peas. They spent nearly a decade manipulating styles in rap and hip-hop, immersed themselves in live performance, and playfully perfected their signature fashion style. Early albums included Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap. Both sold only a few hundred thousand copies worldwide.
When Elephunk hit mainstream airwaves the bright, funk-edged singles “Where is the Love?” and “Hey Mama” featured a new addition: Fergie. Originally hired as the band’s new back up singer, Fergie has proven herself a critical musical component in the Peas’ recipe. The Peas’ record-breaking popularity among international pop, hip-hop and dance audiences is further proof of their appeal and has underscored the well-deserved two Grammy’s they have under their collective belt. Perhaps part of the universal appeal is to be attributed to the Peas’ multicultural roots, the half-stirred, half-shaken genre-bending hits that beg for groove.
Elephunk sold an impressive eight million copies, but follow-up album Monkey Business has since sold over 10 million. Between tours, writing, guest appearances and charitable work, the Peas have their hands full. Break-out talent, Fergie, recently released her first solo album, The Dutchess, to critical acclaim. The album turned out the hip-hop/pop single, “Fergalicious.” Look for a new Peas album sometime in late 2007, sources report.
