The original intent of the Pussycat Dolls (PCD) was to put together a girlie burlesque show with 20th century snap and sizzle complete with curvaceous and talented chicks in sexy lingerie. A recipe such as that is not bound to fail and the evolutionary process for the current Dolls was begun in 1995. PCD was the brainchild of Robin Antin a theatrical/musical choreographer who had worked with other bands and musicians who relied heavily on style and on-stage persona.
Of course the initial experiment was designed for Las Vegas, but today’s PCD deliver a titillating mix of dance, hip-hop and pop. The first decade of the PCD venture was largely a commercial entertainment concept. The group made movie cameos, made its way into the pages of Playboy magazine and became visible enough to engage an international audience. By 2003 it seemed destined to migrate the Dolls to a purely musical level.
Musical successes prior to their first album included singles for the Shall We Dance and Shark Tales soundtracks. But in 2005 perhaps the best breakthrough came in the form of their first album, PCD. Singles “Don’t Cha” and “Stickwitu” became instant hits and gave the group a new purpose in life. Deeper cuts off the album that have been subsequent successes include “Buttons” and “Wait a Minute.” PCD has toured with The Black Eyed Peas, Rhianna and currently with Christina Aguilera. “Stickwitu” earned a Grammy nomination.
