In less than the span of a decade Britney Spears has gone from inauspicious Mousketeer, risen to pop idol status and now skirts paparazzi seeking information on her alleged party habits, fashion styles and romantic exploits. Britney Spears is synonymous with the worst of celebrity musicdom.
Since her sudden appearance in 1998, Spears has metamorphosed from teen idol, post-teen sex-kitten and into mature pop artist, entertainer, and even, oddly enough, wife and mother. In 1998 Spears was only 17. The single, “...Baby One More Time” heralded her first album by the same name, released a few months later in early 1999. That album was an international success and has gone platinum more than a dozen times. It remains her most commercially successful to date and made her a household name.
Her follow-up album Oops...! I Did it Again was released in 2000 and instantly broke records. The title track was the biggest hit off the album and she was nominated once again for a couple of Grammys. The album was more well liked by critics than her first and presented a more mature Spears, due in large part to the artistic contributions from Shania Twain.
Spears as entertainer and media fodder has had forays into movies and videos, a big vehicle for her image. Her recent history ahs been marked by occasional sojourns away from music if not the limelight. But her most recent effort, the album In the Zone launched singles “Toxic” and “Outrageous.” Her four albums all reached number one, an accolade unmatched by any other female artist.
