Real Music Tones for Your Cell

Punk-rock band Blink-182 is a San Diego, California band founded in 1992. The original band members were Mark Hoppus, Scott Raynor, and Tom DeLonge. Raynor left the group in 1988 and was replaced by Travis Barker.

Influences

Fans of the group found their simple melodies appealing. Both Hoppus and DeLonge have cited punk groups Screeching Weasel and The Descendents as early musical influences. Blink recorded its first demo tape, Flyswatter, in May of 1993. Their second demo, Buddha, was released later the same year under the Filter Records label.

Cheshire Cat

In early 1994, the band signed with Cargo Records. Their debut album was recorded in a mind-boggling three days. Cheshire Cat included the popular singles “Strings,” “Sometimes,” “TV,” and “Carousel.”

Dude Ranch, released in 1997, marked Blink’s commercial success. Four million copies were sold worldwide. Shortly afterward, Scott Raynor (drums) left the band. Two versions of the reason for Raynor’s departure were circulated. The first version has it that Raynor had a problem with alcohol dependence and was told to seek treatment or be fired. The second version suggested Raynor had left the band to go to school. Since then Raynor has stated that he had in fact been fired from the group and afterward went to rehab.

New Drummer

Travis Barker, who played drums with The Aquabats, was asked to fill in for Raynor. The band was in the middle of a tour at the time, so Barker had only a few short hours in which to learn all of Blink-182’s songs. The chemistry was solid enough between Barker and Blink that he left The Aquabats to become a permanent member of Blink-182.

The next few years were busy ones for Blink-182. The CD Enema of the State was released in 1999; it sold 10 million copies. Take Off Your Pants and Jacket followed in 2001.

Indefinite Hiatus

On February 22, 2005, the band announced that its members would be on what they described as an “indefinite hiatus.” DeLonge formed a new band called Angels and Airwaves, while Hoppus and Barker formed +44, an up and coming post punk band with a growing legion of fans.
