From Boy Band to Heart Throb

Enrique Martin Morales was born on Christmas Eve, 1971, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The former member of the boy band Menudo recorded his first album as a solo artist in 1991. Martin’s self-titled album sold more than 500,000 copies.

Singer and Soap Star

He started acting on the stage while living in Mexico City. Martin’s follow-up effort, Me Amarás, was released in 1993. The following year, he moved to Los Angeles. Fans of the soap opera General Hospital were introduced to Martin when he landed the role of Miguel Morez on the popular daytime drama.

Martin embarked on a world tour after the release of his third album, Maria. His fourth album, Vuelve, sold eight million copies. Martin also found time to star on Broadway as Marius Pontmercy in Les Miserables.

Livin’ La Vida Loca

Ricky Martin’s first English album was a powerhouse for the singer. It sold more than 17 million copies around the world, making it one of the top-selling albums of 1999. Martin released Sound Loaded in November of 2000. Although the album did debut at #4, it did not make it to the top of the charts. Sales were disappointing. Only two million copies were sold in the United States.

Martin then went back to singing in Spanish. He released a greatest hits album in 2001 called La Historia. It was #1 on the Latin pop charts for five weeks. An English greatest hits album entitled The Best of Ricky Martin was released that same year. It sold one million copies.

In 2003 Martin again released a Spanish-language album. Almas Del Silencio produced a #1 single, “Tal Vez.” Martin’s next effort was an English-language album, Life. Most of the songs were co-written by the singer.

Goodwill Ambassador

Martin is the Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF. He established the Ricky Martin Foundation in his native Puerto Rico to advocate for the welfare of children everywhere. Martin has also worked with International Organization for Migration, which attempts to stop human trafficking.
