Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi was born on April 15, 1978. His birth name was Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero. When he was a young child, Fonsi and the rest of his family moved to Orlando, Florida.
Fonsi enrolled at the University of Florida to study vocal music. During this time, he also recorded some demo tapes in Miami. An important break in Fonsi’s career came when the head of FSU’s Music Department overheard him singing; he was offered a recording contract shortly thereafter.
Fonsi’s first album, Comenzare (I Will Begin), was released in 1999. It was a hit in Puerto Rico and across Latin America. The following year, his second effort, Eterno, hit store shelves. This, too, was a hit for the singer. By this point, Fonsi’s popularity had spread to Spain.
Fonsi attempted to cross over into the English-speaking market with the release of Fight the Feeling in 2002. Unfortunately, the album was not well received. Even though he had experienced a setback in his career, Fonsi’s personal life was looking up by 2003. He had started seeing fellow Puerto Rican Adamari Lopez.
Fonsi took a break from his career in 2004. He went back on the road with an international tour in 2005. Before the tour was finished, it was cancelled. Fonsi chose to return home to spend time with Lopez, who had been diagnosed with cancer. He honored a promise to remain with the actress while she was underwent treatment. The couple traveled between Puerto Rico, Miami, and Mexico while Lopez battled the disease.
Fonsi and Lopez were married in a religious ceremony on June 3, 2006. The star-studded nuptials took place in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Wedding guests included Ednita Nazario, Joey Fatone, Charytin, Carlos Ponce, and Jean Rodriguez.
