Diana Krall is just one in a number of young Canadian artists with an uncanny talent for the distinctly American jazz genre. At an early age, Krall was introduced to jazz artistry directly through her father’s album collection that underscored the jazz greats. As further testament to her musical precociousness, Krall took up the piano before she was five years old. Krall pursued a jazz education at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. While playing piano around her native British Columbia, she caught the ear of jazz musicians Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton. Not long afterward she was whisked off to LA where she took up study under the mentorship of jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles.
Krall’s Smoky Vocals
Her vocal abilities were unexplored at first, but when it was discovered she had a distinctive vocal style, her jazz stardom was almost a definite. Her voice is silky and smoky and captures a characteristic edge that sets most female jazz vocalists apart.
By the time her first album, Stepping Out, was released under the Justin Time label, Krall was ensconced in the colorful jazz scene only found in New York City. This would be her only album produced by this label. She went on to subsequently release her second album with GRP. While Only Trust Your Heart still flew under the critical radar, the album nevertheless is a polished and tightly knit jazz collection of reworked standards inflected with Krall’s evolving style.
Add Songwriting To Her Resume
Third time’s a charm and Krall’s album All For You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio won her a Grammy nomination. Krall’s follow-up tour with crooner Tony Bennett made her a big name in the world of jazz. As if the well of Krall’s talent has no bottom she showcased her songwriting abilities on her 2004 album, Girl in the Other Room. Sources reported her marriage to progressive songwriter and artist Elvis Costello was a big influence on her foray into writing.
