Next-Gen Metal-Heads

Godsmack careened out of the late ‘90s on fire with a cutting heavy metal sound that smacked of pioneers Black Sabbath as well as their alleged prototype, Alice in Chains. Founding band members, including lead songwriter and virtuoso instrumentalist, Sully Erna, all hailed from the Boston area. Originally the group of course earned a fan base from banging out grunge band tunes in the hard rock bar scene. The bands style is often distilled further to thrasher rock. The combination of guitars on testosterone, dark screaming vocals and Ill make it no matter how hard you kick me in the teeth lyrics have fueled the adrenaline rush for a significant number of sports teams, professional wrestlers, and even the military.

The band financed their first album and released it independently not long after their founding. All Wound Up was not destined to be a commercial success on its own, but was picked up by Republic Records, a sub-label of Universal, the following year. The album was re-recorded, repackaged and renamed Godsmack, and released in the summer of 1998 as the bands first official studio album.

No Fear of Acoustic

The new metal audience immediately embraced Godsmack and the band became a standard act on the Ozzfest Tour just two years after they formed. In 2000 the second album, Awake, was released to eager fans. The effort earned Godsmack a Grammy nomination the following year. Faceless produced two Grammy nominated singles. The Other Side (2004) is Godsmacks acoustic distillation of some previously recorded metal tracks as well as some new work, still powerful despite the lack of electrical distortion and congestion. If anyone either doubted the bands abilities to modulate, or smelled a fear of “unplugged,” this album dispelled all.
