Hard rockers Disturbed got their Chicago-based band together in 1996, almost simultaneously as fellow head-bangers Godsmack found themselves on the edge of new metal outside Boston. Disturbed take the new (nu) metal a bit further and dip into the rap-metal realm for more raucous effect. Disturbed were driven to sell their music to a label and distributed a number of their own album mock-ups to prove their professional mettle.
Giant Records, a sub-label of Warner Bros., scooped up one of the Disturbed demos. The first album was called Sickness and included a hit-making single, “Stupify” that set the bands tone and immediately drew a large and cult-like following. Their instant success and audience appeal put them on the list of acts for the notorious Ozzfest Tour, the bacchanalian metal-fest that lands in a couple dozen U.S. cities annually.
Second album, Believe, blew off the presses in 2002 and sold a record number of discs the first week. The lyrics stick close to a ghoulish religious theme and the vocalizations show the bands flexibility with modulation, at once moody and then instantly cutting and throaty just like their genre should be. Again in 2005, Ten Thousand Fists was released to an anxiously awaiting audience and again won the number one spot for its first week of sales. Following this third and very successful effort, Disturbed have focused heavily on touring.
Disturbed followed the example of Ozzfest and launched their own tour, Music as a Weapon, in 2001. The tour has provided a hard rock and metal arena in which emerging bands may show their stuff.
