Def Leppard
Popular Glam Rockers
Of all the hard rock and heavy metal bands that found their audience in the 70s and 80s, Def Leppard is perhaps the most mainstream. The band’s hits are often called album rock, a sub-genre of hard rock. DL is often lumped in with 80s ‘hair bands’ or glam rockers. The UK band followed the British Invasion of the late 60s and 70s. Already bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath had laid the foundation for British hard rock and early heavy metal. At the height of Def Leppard’s popularity band members included: Rick Savage, Joe Elliott, Rick Allen, Steve Clark, and Phil Collen.
The BBC was one of the first radio vehicles by which Def Leppard earned its strong following in the UK. The band’s early style stayed outside the lines of punk and veered more toward heavy metal, but was more accessible than traditional, hard line metal. Their first single “Getcha Rocks Off” pushed Def Leppard’s popularity to new heights in the UK. The band’s first album released in 1980 was On Through the Night. It won more American fans than British and when the band focused more heavily on its American fan base, UK fans rebelled.
Superstardom
Their follow-up album High ‘n’ Dry produced the hit single “Bringin’ On the Heartache.” But it wasn’t until the release of their subsequent two albums that the band really garnered a strong following and won their way to superstardom in the pop-metal world. Pyromania was released in 1983 producing hits “Photograph,” “Foolin’,” and “Rock of Ages.” Hysteria did not come along for another four long years, but brought with it a renewed vigor to the band’s flagging image. Hysteria produced the smash hits “Love Bites” and “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” Def Leppard’s most recent addition to its long career has been their 2006 Def Leppard/Journey Tour.
