Signature Disco Melodies for Your Cellphone

Like other successful pop dance acts of the 70s, KC and the Sunshine Band enjoyed widespread success for the disco decade, but slipped quickly from sight when the style sharply declined. International audiences were consistently quick to embrace new dance acts. Artists like Gloria Gaynor and KC and the Sunshine Band shot to the tops of UK and European dance charts. Once they gained notoriety in the U.S., they were unstoppable.

Grittier Grooves

KC’s first success was with internationally popular singles “Sound Your Funky Horn” and “Queen of Clubs.” Success among U.S. audiences came on the heels of the band’s 1975 self-titled album. Their signature “That’s the Way (I Like It)” was an immediate chart hit among both pop and R&B audiences. Lead singer, Harry Wayne Casey, brought a vocal style that borrowed from soul and urban contemporary artists. He gave the band an edgy sound that diverged from pop contemporaries.

U.S. Hit Makers

The last half of the 70s are widely considered the heyday of the disco era. KC and the Sunshine Band went on to release their album Part 3 from which fans devoured dance and R&B hits “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” and the funky-flavored “I’m Your Boogie Man.” At the close of the 70s their last disco hit was ironically entitled “Please Don’t Go.” But the flavorful era took a quite and resounding nose dive.

During the 80s KC and the Sunshine Band attempted to renovate their sound to appeal to pop fans with lackluster results. It wasn’t until the late 90s that the band had any more musical success. I’ll Be There for You was launched in 2001 and garnered more critical praise than it did any airtime.
