Disco icon Gloria Gaynor has had a thirty-year career ride that resembles that of a roller coaster. Her biggest success clearly was her disco-era anthem “I Will Survive.” This single made Gaynor a dance club and household name. Many fans may be completely unaware of her music outside this dance piece.

I Will Survive Defines Disco

By the time “I Will Survive” hit the airwaves, Gaynor had already produced two albums, Never Can Say Goodbye and Experience Gloria Gaynor. Both forged her reputation in the dance clubs, but in the mainstream the disco craze was still building. When her signature single hit no one anticipated the viral energy it subsequently caused. This song jettisoned the dance era like no other and married Gaynor’s name to the Disco era. But her musical influence on disco had already occurred. Never Can Say Goodbye presented a unique arrangement of songs that effectively predated today’s dance remixes and according to some deeply influenced the disco and dance craze.

Following her rapid rise to dance fame, Gaynor released another couple of distinctly dance and disco albums hoping to capitalize on the previous fever. But disco crashed without a second glance; the dances, the fashion and many of the artists suffered immediate career declines. Gaynor was among them, particularly within the U.S. But the international disco and dance scene remained hot and this is where Gaynor’s follow-up disco albums shone.

Born Again

When Gaynor announced her Christian rebirth she also set out on a different musical track. The shift left her dance fans disappointed and estranged, even though she packaged her inspiration into dance-like formats. Her final mainstream hit, “I Am What I Am,” closed out her dance era.

Gaynor continued to record and dabble with television appearances hoping to renovate her fame. Fortunately she did revive a second career high in 2002. Her album I Wish You Love launched a pair of dance singles that again put Gaynor’s name in the same category with other dance divas.
