The Rolling Stones
Still Going...
When talk of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time comes up names like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Yes, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones are all bandied about. What interesting is that some of the greatest heavy metal and hard rock styles were built on the African American Blues influence, but hail from Britain. Throughout the 1960s British rock tuned its ear to the blues. The Stones were a lead figure in the movement and have often referred to Muddy Waters’ as their model. The band included Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood. Jagger and Richards would go on to forge one of the most artistically fruitful relationships in all of rock and roll.
British Invasion
Americans were brought up close and personal with the Rolling Stones in 1964 when the band first toured here. Already the Stones were remarkable back in their native England and had toured there under the wing of some American R&B and rock musicians. But in 1964, Americans latched onto their signature blues/rock jam style and Mick Jagger’s theatrics.
The first studio album to hit American audiences was titled The Rolling Stones in Britain, but renamed England’s Newest Hit Makers in the States. The tracks were ordered differently but the hits were the same: “I Just Wanna Make Love to You” and “Route 66.” The Stones’ signature single “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” came off of their third UK album, Out of Our Heads.
The Stones have one of the longest running careers of any rock and roll band to date and still outsell and outperform many of their much younger protégés. Over the years top hits have included: “Honky Tonk Women,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Start Me Up.”
