AC/DC Music for Cell Phones
Australian Hard Rockers
The Australian hard rock band AC/DC first came to prominence in the late 1970s. Founding members Malcolm and Angus Young have remained staples of the band since. Although critics have attempted to cast their genre net more widely than simply hard rock, the band remains self-defined as such.
The AC/DC album High Voltage was released to American audiences in 1976. It combined their Aussie releases High Voltage and T.N.T. This year also marked their introduction to U.S. audiences. The band toured in the company of other hard-rock contemporaries of the time, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, and Kiss. Although High Voltage was not the biggest seller, key AC/DC hits like “T.N.T.” and “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” came off it. Their follow-up album, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap was a UK release until 1981 when it was also released into the U.S.
AC/DC had other up and coming bands to compete with including Def Leppard and the Scorpions, both billed as hard rock and heavy metal and both of which credit AC/DC with leading the way. While the band’s U.S. fan base grew it wasn’t until their album Highway to Hell was released that they became a notable hard-rock leader. Highway paved the way now, but it was Back in Black, released in 1980 that finally made AC/DC. The success was bittersweet. Original band member Bon Scott had died the year before and this was the first of the next-gen AC/DC albums. Back in Black was as much a hit-maker for the new band as it would become a classic hard-rock must-have. Hits off the album include “Back in Black,” “Hells Bells,” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.”
Like other hard rock legends AC/DC has continued to rock steady, barring a few dips in popularity and music production. The band continues to tour and is expected to have a new album in 2007.
