tobyMac, short for Toby McKeehan, is one of the leading contemporary Christian music artists today. However, tobyMac defies the label if in nothing else then music style. tobyMac divides his time between his solo career and the band he helped found while still a student at Liberty University in D.C., dc Talk. The band, as well as McKeehan’s style, is derived from rap, R&B and rock. The distinctive sound has made both dc Talk and McKeehan standouts in their own realm.
McKeehan and college pals formed dc Talk in 1987 and recorded and released their own album, The Hardway, in 1992. They continued writing and recording on their own with genre-bending style that made listeners prick up their ears. Not until 1995 with their album Jesus Freak did the band make friends with a larger audience, both Christian and mainstream. In fact the album is among a list of “Top 100 Greatest” in Christian music.
Since 2000, dc Talk has been on hiatus so band members might pursue their own careers. McKeehan has been steadily building his own signature style of R&B and dance-like grooves. His first solo album, Momentum, came out in 2001 and was well received on all fronts. The track “Slam” is an attack rock piece that made the soundtrack for The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and has become the theme song for a number of sports celebs.
Welcome to Diverse City, issued in 2004, underscores the versatility of McKeehan’s work. His most current album, Portable Sounds, will be released at the end of February 2007 and promises a mix of dance, funk and other inspired grooves. See his official site for more.
