Christian rock crossover band MercyMe came into prominence in the mid 1990s just about the time that contemporary Christian rock was dallying along the edge of mainstream alternative rock and hard-rock. Contemporaries Jars of Clay and Creed managed to leap back and forth with deftness. Mercy Me has nearly done the same on a number of occasions.
The popular alt-rock single “I Can Only Imagine” was a mainstream hit and heralded a big breakthrough for the group. It came off the band’s debut album, Almost There, released in 2001. But Mercy Me continued to write and produce for its larger audience, vocal and active Christian youth. The American Music Awards has rewarded the band’s work with a number of well-deserved nominations in a range of categories. The Dove Awards, Christian music’s equivalent of the Grammy’s, has bestowed well over half a dozen awards since Almost There.
MercyMe released their second album in 2002. Spoken For was eagerly anticipated by both Christian and mainstream realms. While “I Can Only Imagine” has been the group’s most successful crossover, other singles have received rave reviews from both camps still. The 2004 album Undone, featured singles “Here With Me Now,” “The Blink of an Eye” and “Homesick,” all of which hit home with audiences of all flavors.
The newest album, Coming Up to Breathe is a departure. Fans of a more personal and introspective faith-based genre will find this album refreshing. Hit singles include “So Long Self” and the title track.
