Not least among the scores of up and coming contemporary Christian music artists is Chris Tomlin. His list of contemporaries includes Casting Crowns and Jeremy Camp all blasting out genre-bending, message-worthy tunes to a hungry audience seeking solace and hope.
Tomlin, a native of Texas, is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, guitarist and vocalist with a will to deliver God’s word in contemporary music that speaks to today’s youth. His music career is traced back to the late 1990s, but he was not engaged to a commercial record label until 2001. A sub-label of EMI, Sixsteps Records, signed Tomlin and quickly released his first commercial album, The Noise We Make. While this effort brought him airplay on Christian radio, Tomlin already had made a name for himself on the Passion tour circuit. Fans already loved his singles, “Be Glorified,” “Unchanging” and “We Fall Down,” which remain among his most popular.
Contemporary Christian music continues to prove that commercial promotion is not all it takes. The best bands are out there making appearances at Christian conventions, in churches and generally preaching their musical word wherever they can. In fact, Tomlin, in example has continued to divide his time between perfecting his music and working as minister.
Tomlin’s most recent album, his 2006 See the Morning, gave an instant jolt to the Christian retail market.
