In 1977 Survivor was formed with members Dennis Johnson, Dave Bickler, Frankie Sullivan, Gary Smith, and Jim Peterik. The rockers first did what any band of the era did—they played whatever bars and clubs they could. In 1979 they released their debut and self-titled album, Survivor. The record turned out no notable hits, but did become a cult classic among die-hard Survivor fans.
The band gained immediate attention for its follow-up album Premonition. The single “Poor Man’s Son” earned them the chance to write and record the theme song for Rocky III in 1982. “Eye of the Tiger” put Survivor on the map and contributed heavily to Rocky III’s success. The band won a Grammy, earned an Academy Award nomination and “Eye of the Tiger” enjoyed a record-breaking seven weeks at #1. Other hit Survivor singles from the same era include “High On You” and “The Search is Over.” The singles have become staples on the menu of easy listening and light rock radio stations around the world.
Reprising this kind of success has not been in the cards for Survivor. Between the mid-80s and early 2000, Survivor went through a number of band member metamorphoses and released another five albums since “Eye of the Tiger” topped the charts around the world back in 1982.
Bickler, a founder of the band, left Survivor in 2000. Does the voice in the Bud Light commercials for “Real Men of Genius” sound familiar? It’s Bickler’s latest musical foray, a humorous marketing scheme that has won him attention once again.
Survivor now consists of members: Chris Grove, Frankie Sullivan, Marc Droubay, Robin McAuley, and Billy Ozzello. The band writes, tours and continues to survive.
