Gypsy Rocker
The mere mention of Stevie Nicks invites mental images of classic Fleetwood Mac album covers as well as her own unique gypsy-ethereal style and dress. Perhaps most fantastic about Nicks is that twenty years after making it big with Fleetwood Mac she still writes, records and tours.
Nicks was born in 1948 in Phoenix, Arizona. Her first forays into the music scene were in partnership with Lindsay Buckingham with whom she was also personally involved. The duo wrote and recorded together as early as the late 1960s and their unique fusion of bluesy folk rock was recognized by big-name bands. In fact the two penned such epic favorites as Landslide, Rhiannon, and I Don’t Want to Know early in their careers. Their first album, Buckingham Nicks, would be the inspiration for later success.
Remaking Fleetwood Mac
In 1974, Fleetwood Mac consisted of Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie and Bob Welch. When Welch left Buckingham and Nicks were invited on board, and at this point the band was truly born. Rumors—signature Fleetwood Mac—was released in 1977, close on the heels of the critically acclaimed White Album.
Nicks Defines her Career
Nicks career has continually defied boundaries of band, musical style and even romantic relationship. Considered a great rock diva, Nicks is not only given significant artistic credit for Fleetwood Mac’s success, but for simultaneously tending her own impressive solo career. Nick’s musical accomplishments span eight solo albums, and two historic concert appearances: Red Rocks in 1985 and the Fleetwood Mac reunion for the Presidential Inauguration in 1992. The band appeared in support of President Clinton who had given new life and purpose to their Don’t Stop hit.
Nicks has continued to dance between band and solo projects with ease. Her discography includes her signature Bella Donna, and the most recent Fleetwood Mac album, Say You Will, released in 2003.
